About Anthony Nolan

Anthony Nolan is a UK-based charitable organisation that works in the areas of blood cancer and blood disorders, and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The charity has been saving lives for nearly 50 years and has over 800,000 potential donors on the Anthony Nolan Register. Their mission is to save and improve the lives of everyone who needs a stem cell transplant.

Challenge

Oracle is a critical component of Anthony Nolan’s technical stack and plays a key role in all of its operational systems. It holds their donor register and supports all aspects of the stem cell transplant process, including search and match, facilitation of the donation process, and all typing services performed in the laboratories.

The charity’s Oracle Database was on-premise, running on aging hardware with aging software. With limited capacity, which had a significant impact on performance, caused outages and prevented the development and maintenance of appropriate testing systems.

The charity had ambitious plans to improve its key services, which would ultimately benefit patients’ lives – plans that their existing Oracle setup could not support.

“We were facing a challenge that our Oracle Database was on an ageing on-premise server which was struggling to cope with demand and was impacting our day-to-day work. We knew we needed to modernise and wanted to move to the cloud to take advantage of its resiliency and scalability. We enlisted Namos to help guide us through the migration to the cloud. Their advice and technical expertise were vital to the project’s successful outcome. Since moving to the Oracle Cloud performance has dramatically improved (up to 200%), and TCO has decreased by 10%.”

Solution at a glance

  • Oracle Autonomous Database

The Namos approach

Following a successful Proof-of-Concept (POC) and several conversations with the Anthony Nolan team, Namos concluded that everything was in order to migrate the existing database to an Oracle Autonomous Database.

In less than 5 months, the charity has transitioned to an integrated digital platform that will help them gain more value from their data by making it easier to store, manage, and access analytics quickly, thereby providing the charity with a complete data ecosystem that offers new levels of automation.

The results

  • Improved data processing, security, and quality for ever-increasing data volumes
  • Improved performance – processes are running up to 200% faster
  • Lower TCO and administration overheads
  • Future growth will no longer require costly resourcing projects
  • Resilient platform for development cycle
  • Users can tap into the capabilities of Machine Learning to extract even more value from their data
  • Analytics applies machine leaning and natural language processing for business performance reporting

Future plans

  • Improve the reliability of interface systems
  • Strengthen development environments
  • Implement DataGuard to provide an enhanced DR process with lower Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and Recovery Point Objective (RPO)
  • Enjoy the responsive and effective support provided by Namos eNlighten Managed Services

“It was clear from the start that Anthony Nolan is very fortunate to have a team of exceptionally talented, enthusiastic, and driven individuals who have worked tirelessly to ensure support partners share that skill and dedication. It was an honour to be a part of that team, and I’m thrilled that Namos may now be counted as one of those support partners. Anthony Nolan has transitioned from an ageing, unstable, and unsupported platform to cutting-edge technology with significantly reduced administration and significantly increased performance and stability.  I’m delighted that it will continue to support the charity for many years to come and aid their life-saving work.”
